Edward Doyle was born in 1886. He lived in number 38 Beechfield Road Ellesmere Port (pictured below). He lived with one person and that was his wife, Margaret Doyle. When he joined the army, he signed up in the Royal Welch Fusiliers as a Private. Each member of the army has a unique service number, Edward Doyle’s was 17074. He had returned home to Ellesmere Port, but had been gassed while in the trenches and never recovered. On the 29th of January 1921 Edward Doyle died, he was only 35 years old. He is buried in Christchurch, Ellesmere Port. On his grave there are inscriptions of his name, age, rank, when he died, and what service he was in. On the grave there is a personal message from his family. His inscription reads, “Recollections true and kind evermore remain, unchangeable in memories golden chain”.

Ted’s brother Maurice was also served in the Royal Welch Fusiliers and fought at Gallipoli, was gassed and suffered a leg wound. Maurice’s son Edward (Ted’s nephew) was also in the Royal Welch Fusiliers, but in WWII where he served in Italy, becoming a war hero winning the Military Medal.
