United Reformed Church, Ellesmere Port

The Whitby United Reformed Church known as Chester Road Congregational Church until 1972.

Congregationalism first came to Ellesmere Port in 1911 and immediately meetings were being held at local Post Offices. A lease was taken on the "Free Trade Hall" in 1913 on the corner of Whitby Road. That is where Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) now stands. A church was formed and the building purchased by the Congregational Church.

Where the United Reformed Church is now, the site was only acquired in 1938 for the building of a new church on the outskirts of the town, which was in a stage of rapid growth due to developing oil industry. Because of the war and other problems in selling the old church, the building of the new church did not happen until 1955. Services were held in a large wooden hut which we can still see today which is placed next to the church.

In the late 1970's the church roof had to be redone so therefore services were being placed in the hut again although other services such as weddings were being held in other churches close by.
