Famous People from Ellesmere Port

Stan Cullis

Stan was born on 25 October 1916 and was educated at Cambridge Road School. In the summer of 1930 he joined local league side Ellesmere Port Wednesday. After a short time there he signed for Wolves at the age of seventeen. He went on to have a distinguished career both as a player and manager for the club.

He eventualy left Wolves in 1965 then spent five years managing neighbours Birmingham City before he retired from the game in 1970. He left football to work in the photography business and then lived in retirement in Malvern. In 1992 Sir Jack Hayward and Aston Villa chairman Doug Ellis arranged a testimonial game at Molineux. The match marked the opening of the new North Bank stand named after Stan. He passed away in February 2001.
