In 1796, Ellesmere Port was on the move,
with a growing population the town grew. Over
the next 100 years the dock area grew along
with the trade and the Industry. In 1894 the
Shropshire Union Canal Co. was allowed free
access to the Ship Canal for vessels up to 400
tons in weight. This brought increased traffic
from 1,142,000 tons in 1898 to 1,685,000 tons
in 1906.
The canals impact on Ellesmere Port,
improved the population to 5,107. It was said
that 1/5 of this number worked on or around the
canal.
The table below shows how many houses
were built during the years of 1901 to 1914.
The information in the spreadsheet, will now
be shown as a bar chart.
As you can see, the busiest years of building
houses was between 1909 and 1911, however
during the whole 13 years there was a large
amount of houses being built altogether. Theses
houses were built to house Ellesmere Port's
growing population.

The increase in Ellesmere Port's growth in the early years after
1896 was because
of the ship canal. An increase in the variety of job offers took place so more people moved to Ellesmere Port for the new opportunities.
In the 20th century the population increased from 64,000 to 82,210.
So overall, from the census of 1801 the population increased from 1,572 people to 82,210 people in 1981.
Population Growth
From 1801 to 1891 Ellesmere Port was growing steadily. By 1896 it was
a sizeable town benefitting now from the new ship canal which brought increasing trade.
Jobs created by the canal were at the corrugated iron works,
Galvanised iron works, the smelting corporation, chemical
works, sewage works, brick works, and ship repairing yard.
